Homemade Smudge Sticks Using Herbs From Your Garden
Making homemade smudge sticks is a simple and rewarding way to preserve herbs from your garden while creating beautiful natural bundles that can be used for fragrance, relaxation, or personal rituals. Whether you’re harvesting lavender, mint, rosemary, or sage, homemade herb bundles are easy to make and make thoughtful handmade gifts as well.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is the practice of burning herbs to produce aromatic smoke. For thousands of years, many cultures around the world have burned herbs for ceremonial, spiritual, or practical purposes. Among many Native American and Indigenous communities, smudging is a sacred ceremony used for purification, healing, and prayer. Those traditions are specific to their cultures and continue to hold deep spiritual significance.
Many people today also enjoy burning dried herb bundles simply to freshen their homes, enjoy natural fragrances, or create a calming atmosphere. These homemade herb bundles are similar in appearance to traditional smudge sticks but can also be appreciated as fragrant dried herbs without any spiritual purpose.
According to WebMD:
“Native Americans and other indigenous peoples have burned sage for centuries as part of a spiritual ritual to cleanse a person or space, and to promote healing and wisdom. It’s been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Romans to treat digestive issues, memory problems, and sore throats.”
Herbs You Can Use
One of the best things about making your own herb bundles is that you can customize them using plants from your own garden or herbs sourced locally.
Some popular choices include:
- Sage
- Lavender
- Mint
- Catnip
- Lemon Balm
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Juniper
- Cedar
- Sweetgrass
- Rosebuds
- Bay Leaves
- Pine
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Frankincense (typically added as resin rather than fresh stems)
I used lavender, purple sage, catnip, and mint from my own garden and flower beds to make the herb bundles pictured here.
How to Make Homemade Smudge Sticks
Step 1: Harvest Your Herbs
Cut your herbs so they are approximately the same length, about 6 to 10 inches long. Gather enough stems to create a bundle as thick or as thin as you prefer.
Fresh herbs work best because they are flexible and easier to tie together.
Step 2: Tie the Bundle

Since the binding material will eventually burn, use natural cotton string, butcher’s twine, hemp twine, or another natural fiber.
I used natural twine on some bundles and 100% cotton embroidery thread on others.
Tie the stems securely near the bottom, leaving a loose tail about 1 to 2 inches long.
Step 3: Wrap the Bundle

Wrap the long end of the string tightly around the bundle at an angle until you reach the top.
Then crisscross the string as you wrap back down toward the base. Wrap it around the stems several times to create a sturdy handle before tying it securely to the loose tail. Trim any excess string.
If needed, tuck in or trim any loose leaves or flowers.
Drying Your Herb Bundles
Hang your bundles upside down in a dry, well-ventilated location out of direct sunlight. A thin wire, an ornament hook, or a clothespin works well for hanging them.
You can also lay them flat on a drying rack or screen if preferred.
Most herb bundles take about two weeks to dry completely, although larger bundles or humid weather may require a little longer.
The herbs should feel crisp and dry before using or storing them.
How to Use a Homemade Smudge Stick

When you’re ready to use your dried herb bundle:
- Hold the bundle by the wrapped handle.
- Light the opposite end using a candle, lighter, or match.
- Allow it to burn for a few seconds.
- Gently blow out the flame so the herbs continue to smolder and produce fragrant smoke.
Always use a heat-safe dish, ceramic bowl, shell, or other non-flammable container to catch any falling ash or embers.
Never leave a burning herb bundle unattended.
How to Extinguish It
To put out your herb bundle, gently press the burning end into sand or another non-flammable surface until all embers have gone out.
Avoid using water unless necessary, as the bundle will need to dry completely before it can be burned again.
Helpful Tips
- Harvest herbs after the morning dew has dried.
- Use fresh herbs for easier wrapping.
- Avoid making bundles that are too thick, as they take longer to dry.
- Store dried bundles in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
- Experiment with different herb combinations to create your favorite natural scents.
Making your own homemade smudge sticks is an easy gardening project that lets you enjoy your herb harvest long after the growing season ends. Whether you use them simply for their pleasant fragrance, as seasonal décor, or as part of your own personal traditions, these handmade herb bundles are a beautiful way to bring a little of your garden indoors.
