Easy White Soda Bread — Quick, Tender, No Yeast Needed
Want fresh-baked bread without the fuss of yeast and rising time? This Easy White Soda Bread delivers moist, tender bread with just pantry staples and simple steps. Soda bread uses both baking powder and baking soda as leavening agents, so it rises quickly — ideal for busy days when you want homemade bread without waiting around. I love serving this bread on St. Patrick’s Day.
This recipe calls for just a few common ingredients, except for the buttermilk. Buttermilk is not something most people keep on hand. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can use a homemade buttermilk substitute instead — just be sure the recipe has enough acid so the baking soda reacts properly. I used a Buttermilk Substitute when I made this bread. Using the milk-and-white-vinegar substitute, it still turned out wonderful. Don’t substitute with regular milk.

There’s no complicated shaping or kneading — the dough will be soft and slightly sticky. Stir just until the dry ingredients are moistened so the bread stays tender. Once mixed, it goes straight into the oven!
This bread is great served warm with soups, stews, chili, butter, and jam, or even honey — and leftovers slice more easily once the loaf is completely cool.
Ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 Tbsp baking powder

⅓ cup sugar

1 tsp baking soda

1 egg, slightly beaten

2 cups buttermilk

¼ cup melted butter

Instructions

Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 325°F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan so the bread releases easily after baking. -
Combine Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda until well-blended. -
Mix Wet Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, blend the slightly beaten egg with the buttermilk. Add this mixture all at once to the dry ingredients. -
Mix Together:
Stir just until the ingredients are moistened and come together. Avoid over-mixing so the bread stays tender. -
Add Butter:
Pour in the melted butter and stir gently to incorporate it throughout the dough. -
Bake:
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 60–70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. -
Cool:
Remove the bread from the oven and cool on a wire rack before slicing. Soda bread slices more easily once fully cooled.

If you want to change the flavor of this bread, you can add nuts, seeds, or dried fruit. Or sprinkle oats or coarse salt on top.
This Easy White Soda Bread is simple, comforting, and satisfying — perfect alongside hearty soups, stews, or eaten warm, slathered with butter and jam.
Quick bread loaves slice more easily when completely cool. Although this can be served the day that it is made, it may taste even better the next day.

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease a 9x5 loaf pan.
- In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
- In a small bowl blend egg and buttermilk together, and add all at once to the flour mixture. Mix just until moistened. Stir in butter. Pour into prepared loaf pan.
- Bake for 60 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
