Foods You Shouldn’t Heat in the Microwave (and What to Do Instead)

Microwaves were invented in 1945, and since then, they have become an essential tool for the kitchen. Microwaves are an incredible invention that has changed the way we cook. They can heat food quickly and evenly, so there’s less chance of burning or overcooking. Microwaves are one of the most convenient kitchen tools out there, but not every food is meant to be zapped. While they’re great for reheating leftovers quickly, certain foods can lose quality, heat unevenly, or even become dangerous when microwaved.

Before you press start, here are some common foods you should avoid heating in the microwave, and what to do instead.

1. Whole or Hard-Boiled Eggs

Microwaving whole eggs can cause them to explode, and the results can be messy and dangerous. The shells of eggs are porous, which means that they allow steam and moisture to escape. When you microwave an egg, the heat causes the water inside the egg to vaporize quickly, which can cause it to explode.

Better option for Eggs:
Microwaving eggs without the shell is safe, but you should break the yolk membrane of an unbeaten egg before microwaving to allow the steam to escape. And cover the container with a lid, plastic wrap, or a paper towel to contain any mess.

Microwaving hard-boiled eggs is one of the biggest no-nos. As the egg heats up, steam builds inside with nowhere to escape—leading to a messy (and sometimes dangerous) explosion.

Better option for Hard Boiled Eggs:
Reheat in a bowl of hot water or slice before warming.

2. Breast Milk or Baby Formula

Microwaving baby bottles can create dangerous “hot spots” that may burn your baby’s mouth. It can also destroy important nutrients. In addition, microwaving breast milk can also create harmful toxins. This is because microwaves can cause the milk to heat up too quickly, which can lead to the formation of harmful compounds. Your baby’s health is definitely more important than a quick and easy meal!

Better option:
Warm bottles in a bowl of warm water, or use a bottle warmer.

3. Processed Meats (Hot Dogs, Bologna, Deli Meat)

Heating hot dogs in the microwave can cause them to burst open, and the hot dog filling can splatter all over your oven. This is because hot dogs are filled with a meat mixture containing high levels of fat and water. When these ingredients are heated up, they expand and create pressure inside the hot dog. If the hot dog isn’t cooked evenly, this pressure can cause it to burst open. Heating processed meats in the microwave may lead to the formation of harmful compounds due to preservatives reacting with high heat.

Better option:
Cook on the stovetop or in the oven for safer, more even heating.

4. Raw Hot Peppers

Microwaving peppers releases capsaicin into the air, which can irritate your eyes, throat, and lungs when you open the microwave.

Better option:
Sauté or roast peppers in a well-ventilated area.

5. Whole Potatoes (or Any Whole Produce)

Whole potatoes, tomatoes, or other produce can explode due to trapped steam if they aren’t pierced first.

Better option:
Always poke holes or cut them before microwaving.

6. Frozen Meat

Cooking frozen meat in the microwave often leads to uneven heating—meaning parts may stay undercooked while others dry out.

Better option:
Thaw in the fridge first, then cook using your preferred method.

Microwaves are incredibly useful, but they’re not foolproof. Some foods become unsafe, while others turn out disappointing. In many cases, the issue comes down to uneven heating, trapped steam, or chemical changes during reheating.

When in doubt, a few extra minutes in the oven, on the stovetop, or in the air fryer can make a big difference in both safety and taste.
