Garlic Cheese Biscuits

These easy Garlic Cheese Biscuits are soft, cheesy, buttery, and packed with garlic flavor. They’re made from scratch with simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, and they can be ready for the oven in just a few minutes.

The combination of melted butter, cheddar cheese, and garlic makes these biscuits especially flavorful. They’re delicious served warm alongside soup, chili, pasta, or just about any dinner that could use a good homemade biscuit.

I also love that you don’t need a rolling pin or biscuit cutter for this recipe. The dough is simply mixed together and dropped by heaping spoonfuls onto a baking sheet, making these easy drop biscuits that are perfect for busy weeknight dinners.

Why You’ll Love These Garlic Cheese Biscuits

  • Easy to make: No rolling or cutting the dough is required.
  • Made with simple ingredients: You may already have everything you need in your pantry and refrigerator.
  • Cheesy and flavorful: Cheddar cheese and garlic give these biscuits plenty of flavor.
  • Quick: They only take about 10-12 minutes to bake.
  • Perfect with dinner: They’re delicious with soups, stews, chili, pasta, and casseroles.
  • Great served warm: Brushing the freshly baked biscuits with garlic butter makes them even better.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup whole or 2% milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbs sugar
  • 1 Tbs baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (mild, medium, or sharp)

Topping

  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp salt or garlic pepper seasoning

How to Make Garlic Cheese Biscuits

1. Prepare the baking sheet

Preheat your oven to 425°F.

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or spray it with cooking spray.

2. Make the biscuit dough

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt.

Add the milk and ½ cup melted butter. Stir just until the ingredients are combined. Be careful not to overmix the dough.

Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese.

3. Drop the biscuits onto the baking sheet

Drop the dough by heaping spoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheet. You don’t need to shape the biscuits—the rustic, drop-biscuit shape is part of what makes this recipe so easy.

Leave a little space between the biscuits so they have room to spread as they bake.

4. Bake

Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the biscuits just start to turn golden brown around the edges and on the bottom.

Be careful not to overbake them. You want the biscuits to remain soft and tender inside.

5. Add the garlic butter topping

While the biscuits are baking, mix the ¼ cup melted butter, ¼ tsp garlic powder, and ¼ tsp salt or garlic pepper together.

Brush the garlic butter mixture over the tops of the hot biscuits as soon as they come out of the oven.

Serve warm.

Tips for Making the Best Garlic Cheese Biscuits

Don’t overmix the dough. Once the milk and butter are added, stir just until everything is combined. Overmixing can result in tougher biscuits.

Shred your own cheese if you can. Freshly shredded cheddar melts nicely into the biscuits and gives them a great cheesy texture.

Choose your favorite cheddar. Mild, medium, or sharp cheddar will all work. Sharp cheddar will give the biscuits a stronger cheese flavor.

Watch the baking time. These biscuits only need about 10-12 minutes. Take them out when the edges and bottoms are just beginning to turn golden brown.

Brush them while they’re hot. The garlic butter topping soaks into the warm biscuits and adds even more flavor.

What Kind of Cheese Can I Use?

Cheddar is my choice for this recipe, but you can experiment with other shredded cheeses if you want to change the flavor.

Monterey Jack, Colby, or a cheddar-Jack blend would all be good options. You could even combine two different cheeses for extra flavor.

Keep in mind that different cheeses can melt differently, so the texture may vary slightly from the original recipe.

What to Serve With Garlic Cheese Biscuits

These homemade cheese biscuits are a great addition to so many meals. They’re especially good served warm alongside:

  • Chili
  • Vegetable soup
  • Chicken noodle soup
  • Tomato soup
  • Beef stew
  • Spaghetti
  • Lasagna
  • Baked chicken
  • Meatloaf
  • Roast beef
  • Chicken and gravy

They’re also delicious on their own as a quick snack.

How to Store Garlic Cheese Biscuits

Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for a day or two, or refrigerate them for longer storage.

For the best texture, warm leftover biscuits in the oven or microwave before serving. If you’re reheating them in the microwave, heat them briefly so they don’t become tough.

Can You Freeze Garlic Cheese Biscuits?

Yes. Allow the baked biscuits to cool completely, then place them in a freezer-safe container or bag.

When you’re ready to serve them, thaw and warm them in the oven. You can brush them with a little additional melted butter before serving if desired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use skim milk?

Whole or 2% milk is recommended for this recipe. They provide a little more richness than skim milk, which helps give the biscuits their soft texture.

Can I use pre-shredded cheddar cheese?

Yes. Pre-shredded cheese works, although freshly shredded cheddar generally melts a little more smoothly.

Why are my biscuits tough?

Overmixing the dough is one of the most common reasons biscuits become tough. Stir the ingredients together only until the dough comes together.

Can I make these biscuits without garlic?

Yes. If you prefer plain cheese biscuits, you can leave out the garlic powder. You can also skip the garlic in the topping and use melted butter with salt instead.
